About Garden City, Michigan
Garden City is a compact western Detroit suburb in Wayne County, about 15 miles from downtown, that was literally platted on the English 'garden city' ideal of one-acre home lots so each family could grow its own fruit and vegetables. Though only 5.86 square miles, it holds an outsized place in American retail history as the birthplace of the first Kmart and the first Little Caesars. Its population peaked near 42,000 in 1970 and has since settled around 27,000.
